Crisps decay teeth

I often watch the television programme QI, Chaired by Stephen Fry. It is stuffed full of unusual facts and witty banter. In today’s revelations was the obscure piece of knowledge that crisps decay teeth worse than sweet sugary drinks. In fact, allegedly, they are about the worst thing a person can eat if they wish to escape tooth decay. For some unknown reason the most dangerous culprit is Cheese and Onion flavour!

polly is there something in the crisps or just maybe the salt ? what could it be ? I usually try to stick to the plain or maybe bbq flavored. not much of a cheese eater.

RE - According to scientists crisps when chewed stick to your teeth like glue and that causes bacteria to nest all over the teeth forming plaque which leads to tooth decay. Although sweet things also attract bacteria they have a tendency to wash off the teeth quite quickly. Whereas the chewed crisps will stay on the teeth for hours.

hey im a dental student just wanted to clear up that cheese is actually not harmful to your teeth in fact we encourage people to eat it as a snack inbetween meal times instead of sweet things. crisps are bad because the bacteria breakdown the nutrients in the crisp and produce plaque. also because they do stick to teeth for longer and therefore teeth are exposed to the plaque for longer. its nonsence about different flavours of crisps being worse-they are all equally as bad.keep eating cheese

Anonymous - I never said in my post that it was harmful to teeth to eat cheese! Cheese flavours are slightly different however and the cheese and onion flavour crips being the most harmful of all of the flavours to the onset of tooth decay has allegedly been proven.

Please if you comment again there is no need to remain anonymous I welcome your contribution.

TO LAINY: PLEASE DO NOT STOP EATING CHEESE - CHEESE ON ITS OWN IS GOOD FOR YOUR TEETH, BONES AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT YOUR DISPOSITION. IT HAS BEEN WELL KNOWN FOR A LONG TIME THAT PEOPLE WHO DRINK MILK, EAT CHEESE AND THE ODD HANDFUL OF SESAME SEEDS NEVER LOOSE THEIR TEMPERS ARE ALWAYS CALM AND LESS LIKELY TO HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE ... THIS IT IS CLAIMED IS PROBABLY DUE TO THE CALCIUM WHICH ACTS SIMILAR TO A NERVE TONIC AND MAKE A PERSON SWEETER.
